A wonderful example of Baroque art, built by the greatest exponent Giuseppe Zimbalo.
The square stands on the remains of the ancient Cathedral of the Assumption, together with the bell tower. It is in fact in the heart of the historic center of Lecce, where at the end of Via Palmieri, a refined Baroque setting of Piazza Duomo opens up, announced by the monumental entrance propylaea with the statues of the Church Fathers above. They are figures who seem to do the honors of the house to visitors who enter the square, sacred par excellence but also fascinating for the warm tones of the Lecce stone.
"U leccisu" is a limestone rock that is easy to work with and covers the four buildings that rise around the square: the Bell Tower, the Cathedral, the Episcopio and the Diocesan Museum.
